Polo: Ahmed, Taimur help LPC clinch Cup

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Dec 17: Five goals by Ahmed Ali Tiwana, including a hat trick and three by Taimur Mawaz Khan helped Lahore Polo Club (LPC) annex the Thomson Polo Challenge Cup beating a spirited Jaipur Polo Club, India (JPC) 9-7 on Saturday.

LPC led the first chukker 2-1 with Usman Haye opening the account with a field goal under the neck shot.

Minutes later Vishal Singh restored the parity 1-1 by scoring a spectacular goal with a lofted shot from 100 yards.

In the dying minutes, Taimur drew first blood converting a 30-yard penalty hit with a lofted shot as LPC gained ascendancy 2-1. LPC forged ahead 4-2 in the second chukker.

Vishal again tied the score 2-2 scoring his second crowning a field attempt.

LPC salvaged the lead through Taimur, who banged home his second, converting a 30-yard penalty and Ahmed who struck his first, capitalising on 60-yard penalty. Ahmed scored back-to-back goals to take a clear lead 6-2 for the home team.

He scored the first off a fine pass from Taimur and then struck with individual efforts, picking the ball from the middle and with three tapping romped home.

But Jaipur retaliated strongly as Vishal converted three penalties — 40, 30, 60 — and gave an angular pass to Ajit Singh to catch up with LPC, who missed a chance in the dying minutes of again taking the lead when Ahmed missed a 40-yard penalty.

In the decisive fourth chukker, Taimur scored his third, converting a spot penalty near the goalpost to put LPC 7-6 ahead but Vishal again rescued Jaipur by scoring the equaliser and his last and sixth goal on field attempts.

But Ahmed finally sealed the fate of the match with back-to-back field goals to complete the tally.
