Aqeel top seed in richest tournament


KARACHI, Dec 17: Top players from all over the country have confirmed their participation in the inaugural Karachi Club (KC)-Yaqoob Admani memorial tennis championship, the richest tennis event in Pakistan’s history the main round of which starts from Sunday at Karachi Club.

The tournament carries prize money of Rs360,000 with Rs65,000 for men’s single winner and Rs35,000 for ladies event.

Aqeel Khan is the top seed in the men’s event followed by Asim Shafiq. Jalil Khan is third seed and Nomi Qamar is seeded fourth.

The events in the tournament comprise junior U-17 singles, boys U-15 singles, men’s doubles, junior U-17 doubles, senior 45 plus doubles beside men’s and ladies singles events. The girls U-17 have also been introduced in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the first phase of men’s qualifying rounds was played at Karachi Club on Saturday, the results of which are as follows:

Men’s event: Syed Abbas Raza bt Ahmed Waqar 6-2, 6-3; Gul Hameed bt Mubashir Afridi 6-2, 6-0; M Manzar bt Faris Qasim 6-2, 6-1; Saif Noor w/o Pervaiz Khan.—PPI
