Seminar on honour killing held

SHIKARPUR, Dec 16: A seminar on “How we can end honour killing” was organised by the Oxfam-Pakistan in collaboration with the Human Rights Education Forum Shikarpur on Friday. The programme manager of the Oxfam-Pakistan, Ms Ambreen Nawaz Shaikh, presided over the seminar.

Ambreen Sheikh said the programme would bring about a change in attitude, behaviour and practices in society.

She spoke about aims and objects of the campaign against honour killing to reduce social acceptance of practice, generating a collective public stand against the brutal custom and to create awareness for women’s rights.

She said the campaign was a part of Oxfam’s South Asia regional initiative to end violence against women involving a coalition of more than 400 civil society groups, organizations and individuals in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Iqbal Detho, Sodho James, Naveed Alam, Mumtaz Mangi, Shahida Memon, Farzana Memon and Hameer Chandio spoke on the occasion.
