Protest rallies held in districts of Sindh: Kalabagh dam

HYDERABAD, Dec 16: Three demonstrations were held on Friday in the city in protest against proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam. Activists of the Sindh National Party took out a procession from the Hyder chowk to the press club.
Anwar Khoso, Agha Shamshad Mughal, Salma Mughal, Wahid Bux Sangrasi and Ali Baloch led the protesters.
They raised slogans against the Kalabagh dam and Punjab.
The speakers rejected construction of any dam on the Indus River, saying the river was only source of life for people of Sindh.
They said if the rulers insisted on the Kalabagh dam, they would have to build it over their bodies.
They said Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim was a hero of Sindh as he had opposed the dam and was mot fearful of sacrificing his post.
The SNP announced to participate in the rally to be staged in Karachi on December 22 against the Kalabagh dam under aegis of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee.
They also announced to stage a rally in Karachi on December 25.
ROAD BLOCKED: Activists of the Sindh National Party blocked the Seri bridge on the Tando Mohammad Khan road and burnt tyres in protest against proposed construction of Kalabagh dam on Friday.
SNP leaders Ali Murad Chachar and Ashraf Channa said police arrested Shabbir Inqalabi, Ashraf Noonari and his brother Irshad Noonari on Thursday night but they were released on Friday.
The leaders said they would not accept any water project on the Indus River and would block the National Highway under a new strategy.
SHC: Activists of the Sindh Hari Committee took out a procession from the Hyder chowk to protest against President’s announcement for the construction of Kalabagh dam on Friday.
The rally culminated at the press club.
Akbar Jatoi, Amir Chachar, Alam Memon and M.S. Bhurgari led the protesters.
They said the people of Sindh could not see their province becoming dry and the construction of dam would endanger country’s integrity.
They said the country had already been dismembered and now the rulers wanted to jeopardize solidarity of the rest of Pakistan.
They rejected all controversial water projects.
Sukkur: The Sukkur chapter of the Sindh High Court Bar Association in a resolution has demanded that disputed Kalabagh dam be abandoned forever because it is against solidarity of the country.
The bar adopted the resolution in an emergency meeting held on Friday.
Senior lawyer Imdad Ali Awan presided over the meeting.
The bar appealed to authorities concerned not to take the issue which might harm integrity of the country.
The Kalabagh dam will lead towards disintegration of the country which is not in the interest of the people of Pakistan.
The bar association supported statement of Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim about his principled stand on the Kalabagh dam.
“The people of the province in general and we lawyers community of Sindh in particular welcome and congratulate Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim on his bold stand on the Kalabagh dam” said the resolution.
The bar appealed to members of the Sindh assembly (treasury and opposition) to pass a fresh unanimous resolution against the Kalabagh dam in order to show solidarity among various sections of Sindh which was the need of the day.
The bar association congratulated MQM leader Altaf Hussain on his statement on the Kalabagh dam and appealed him to support interests of Sindh.
The bar appreciated efforts taken by political parties especially leadership of Ponam on the Kalabagh dam.
“The Kalabagh dam is not in the interest of the country as three provinces had already rejected it through resolutions passed by their respective assemblies”.
The bar invited Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim to come and address members of the bar, recognizing his principled stand on the Kalabagh dam which he had taken against Islamabad.
AT: Hundreds of activists of the Awami Tehrik staged a sit-in on the National Highway at Ghotki for about three hours in protest against anti-Sindh projects of Kalabagh dam and Thal canal.
The protestors burnt tyres and raised slogans against the federal government for backing the Punjab government on the Kalabagh dam issue.
They condemned raising of the disputed issue of Kalabagh dam again and again.
AT leaders said three assemblies of the country had adopted unanimous resolutions against the Kalabagh dam but the federal government instead of honouring the resolutions was insisting construction of the Kalabagh dam.
They said the Kalabagh dam could harm solidarity and integrity of the country.
NAUSHAHRO Feroze: A large number of activists and workers of PPP, JUI-F, JSQM and citizens took out a protest rally on Friday from Jamia Masjid Kandiaro to the main chowk against construction of Kalabagh dam.
They were led by Asif Kaleri, Moulana Amir, Syed Aftab Shah, Zafar Khoso and Ghulam Qadir Jalbani.
The leaders said the people of Sindh and Pakistan would not allow construction of the dam. They said that Sindh Assembly had already passed two resolutions against the dam and people of other provinces also were aware of conspiracy which aimed at to creating misunderstanding between the provinces by constructing the dam.
Meanwhile, students of Mehran Degree College, Moro led by Sanam Korai, Ahmed Ali and others took out a protest rally from the college up to the press club against construction of Kalabagh dam.
They carried banners and placards, inscribed with anti-dam construction slogans.
They said that government wanted to deprive people of Sindh of their due share of water of the Indus River by constructing the dam.
KHAIRPUR: The Sindh Hari Committee, Khairpur, took out a procession in Saghiyoon and Thari Mirwah on Friday to protest against proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam.
The procession was led by peasant leader Comrade Ismail Qureshi.
They staged a protest demonstration outside the press club, Sobhodero.
SHC workers, farmers and social workers participated in the rally.
Comrade Ismail told the protesters that instead of announcing construction of the Kalabagh dam, Gen Pervez Musharraf should put an end to the feudal system and implement law to distribute lands among landless peasants.
He said that amount to be incurred on the Kalabagh dam should be used for imparting free education to the poor.
In Thari Mirwah taluka, peasants and social workers, led by Comrade Tamachi staged a protest demonstration outside the Thari Mirwah press club against construction of the dam.
MIRPURKHAS: Mirpurkhas district PPP president Haji Noor Hassan Chandio on Friday announced that a procession from Mirpurkhas would participate in the Karachi rally against construction of the Kalabagh dam on December 22.
He was presiding over a meeting of PPP Mirpurkhas chapter at the Jilani house.
