UN’s deputy chief resigns

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 16: United Nations Deputy Secretary General Louise Frechette resigned her post on Friday in order to take up a new post as ‘distinguished fellow’ at the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, Canada, a UN spokesman said on Friday.

Ms Frechette will remain at the United Nations until April in order to finalize measures for carrying out management reforms at the world body.

The spokesman said that Mr Annan had not chosen any successor to Ms Frechette as he ‘prefers to the leave position open’ and assign her duties to other officials in his secretariat.
