Amir to visit Muzaffarabad

LONDON, Dec 15: England’s Olympic boxing silver medallist Amir Khan of Pakistani origin is to visit devastated earthquake city of Muzaffarabad during a special trip to capital of Azad Kashmir this week.

Amir admitted he had been “moved deeply” by television pictures of the Oct 8 disaster which claimed lives of an estimated 80,000 people.

The 19-year-old will travel to affected region with Oxfam and visit charity’s Earthquake Response Programme on Saturday.

Amir said: “I have been moved deeply by images I saw on television showing suffering of survivors. I want to do everything I can to make sure earthquake victims are not forgotten and receive aid they need to survive harsh winter. I hope my visit will help keep plight of survivors in headlines.”

Amir’s career has been closely followed in Pakistan since he turned professional. He won his fourth fight last Saturday against Daniel Thorpe in London.

Oxfam director Barbara Stocking, who will also be travelling to Pakistan, welcomed Khan’s visit. “Amir Khan’s visit will help Oxfam keep fate of quake survivors in news”.—PPI
