KARACHI: Revamping of water lines started

KARACHI, Dec 15: The City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, on Thursday said the city government had started works on the revamping of water supply lines, so that the 100-mgd extra water from the K-III could be supplied to the metropolis from March next year.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of a new branch of PICIC Commercial Bank on Nishtar Road, Mr Kamal said the city government had decided to put all underground utility lines and connections on one side of the road before initiating any roadwork, so that no difficulty was faced while initiating any new project.

He said no concrete policy was chalked out for uplift of water and sewerage system in the past and resources spent on construction of roads had gone to waste due to accumulation of sewerage water on roads and their digging by various utility entities.

“Roads in America and London will also get dilapidated within a week if sewerage water accumulates over them. Now, we have decided to put utility connections and lines on one side of the roads, so they will not be dug in case of repair,” he added.

He said the county’s development was linked to the development of Karachi; therefore, the city government had chalked out a comprehensive and concrete strategy and started its execution, which would soon bear fruits.

The nazim further said the purpose of solving basic problems of citizens was to provide them with potable water, healthy environment, clean and good quality roads, education and healthcare facilities.

“We have started taking efforts to solve these basic problems, which is our top priority.”

Mr Kamal also lamented non-existence of water and sewerage system in the largest industrial zone of the country – the Korangi Industrial Area - and said work had been started for rectification of the situation.
