LANDI KOTAL (Khyber Agency), Dec 14: All government primary schools in the Landi Kotal area have conducted their annual examination three months ahead of the schedule.

The annual examination in the primary schools in the NWFP and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) are held in March 2006.

The government schools in Landi Kotal close for winter holidays in the first week of December and reopen at the end of February.

But the teaching staff of about 67 government primary schools, for boys and girls, in Landi Kotal took the examinations before the start of winter vacations. Results would be announced in March along with other schools.

In 2004, the agency education department had issued a notification, calling for examinations to be conducted in March.

Conducting examinations ahead of the schedule in Landi Kotal was in practice for the last four years, but, so far, no action had been taken against the schools concerned. However, examinations were held in March last year after the issuance of the notification.

Khyber Agency’s Education Officer Rashid Khan said that the department would look into the matter and if rules permitted, the annual examinations would be held again in March.

BOY CRUSHED: A minor Afghan boy was crushed to death by a trailer at the Torkham border town on Tuesday.

The boy, Niamatullah, used to bring old auto parts from across the border, was trying to pass underneath the trailer to skip being seen by the border guards when the trailer moved and crushed him. He died on the spot.

In another incident, a young man, who was said to be a heroin addict, committed suicide at the Bhaikhel village near Landi Kotal on Wednesday.

Walat Shah was a drug addict and was jobless for many years, his parents had expelled him from home for not giving up the drug.

STUDENT DEMO: Students of private schools in Bara on Wednesday staged a demonstration to protest against kidnapping of a student and the killing of a teacher in the area.

The protesters marched on the main road and raised slogans against the political administration.

They demanded of the authorities to immediately arrest the killers of Bakhtiar, a teacher, and recover the kidnapped student.

All private schools in Bara also remained closed on Wednesday.
