Hari Committee to launch movement: Kalabagh dam issue
Bureau Report
HYDERABAD, Dec 14: The Sindh Hari Committee has not accepted an invitation of President Gen Pervez Musharraf for discussion on the issue of Kalabagh dam. Speaking at a news conference at the Hyder Mehfil here on Tuesday, the Sindh Hari Committee chief, Comrade Azhar Jatoi, said that the committee will launch a movement throughout Sindh from December 16 against the dam.
He said that Sindh had risen against the dam and all nationalist parties had decided not to hold talks with the president on the issue.
He feared the province would turn into a desert if the dam was constructed.
Mr Jatoi warned that Sindh MNAs and MPAs would be outcast if they support any dam on the Indus.
Answering a question, he said that the committee would support any alliance for the common cause although it was not invited to attend the meeting of the nationalists in Karachi.
JSQM: Basheer Khan Qureshi, the JSQM chairman, in a statement issued here on Tuesday said the Indus river was Sindh’s property and therefore construction of any dam would not be allowed on it.
He congratulated members of the Sindh assembly and the national assembly from Sindh to oppose construction of the dam in the assemblies.
Mr Qureshi said President Gen Musharraf had no right to take a unilateral decision on the Kalabagh dam issue.
He said Sindhis were ready to fight against the construction.
HARI SANGAT: The 13th annual convention of the Sindh Taraqi Pasand Hari Sangat here on Tuesday strongly opposed construction of any dam on the Indus river.
It announced that the Sangat would launch a protest movement against the Kalabagh dam from December 18.
Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party leaders, Hote Khan Gadi, Aashiq Solangi and Nandlal Mahli spoke on the occasion.
The convention also deplored low prices of crops, especially rice, sugarcane and chillies.
It demanded from the government to fix prices of all crops to save farmers from starvation.
It said that millions of acres of land, which had been occupied by landlords, should be distributed among the growers and they should be given proprietary rights under the Sindh Tenancy Act.
The convention said that small growers should be exempted from agriculture and water taxes.
The annual elections of the Hari Sangat were also held on the occasion, in which Sarang Unnar was elected president, Sher Chhachhar as vice president, Shabbir Chandio as general secretary, Juman Samoon as joint secretary and Eidan Rauf as information secretary.
SPSC: The Sindh Public Service Commission, Hyderabad, announced here on Wednesday that a written test for the post of medical officer in BS-17 will be held on December 21 at 11:00am in Hyderabad, Karachi and Sukkur.
The secretary of the commission said that intimation letters had been issued to the candidates.
Separate examination centres for males and females have been set up in different educational institutions of the three cities.
In case, any candidate did not receive the letter, he/she should reach the examination centre at least one hour before commencement of the paper along with an admission letter of the commission and original national identity card.
