KARACHI: Privatization of solid waste management announced
KARACHI, Dec 14: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday announced privatization of the solid waste management system. The announcement was made in a meeting, chaired by the nazim, held at the Civic Centre. Mustafa Kamal said that tenders would be invited by placing advertisement in newspapers on Dec 18. These tenders would be approved or rejected after proper weighting on Dec 30 and deal with the approved companies would be signed on Jan 4, 2006. He said that the approved companies would start their work from Jan 15, 2006.
The nazim said that the decision of privatizing this sector was taken after consultation with town administrations. He said that the whole process would be completed transparently.
To dispose off all garbage collected from different parts of the city, two landfill sites had been selected, one in Surjani and the other in SITE area. He said that town administrations would supervise the process of lifting garbage and shifting it to landfill sites.
He said that this decision was made in the wider interest of the city.
During the meeting, the city nazim especially sought proposals from the nazims of Gadap, Lyari, Keamari and Bin Qasim towns. On the occasion, all the town nazims expressed their satisfaction over the decision.
Meanwhile, Mustafa Kamal announced that the work on revamping water supply and sewerage disposal systems in F.B Area would be initiated within one month.
He was addressing at a reception hosted by the Federal B Area’s Association of Trade and Industry in his honour here on Wednesday.
He claimed that all planning in this regard had been finalized. After revamping of the water and sewerage systems, roads would be built in the area according to international standard.
Mustafa Kamal said that he was well aware of the issues of industrial areas of Karachi and made it clear that all this was necessary not just to please the industrialists, but also to safeguard the future of 3.5 million workers.
He said that industrial areas would be made at par with international standard within two years and in this regard work had been initiated in Korangi.
Mustafa Kamal said that though the government could not provide jobs to all jobless people, unemployment would be reduced by promoting industrial sector. He said that 42,000 vacancies were vacant in the province at present, while more than 3.5 million people were serving in industries of Karachi.
He said that work on ‘9000 Road’ of the F.B Area had been initiated.
Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry Chairman Rehan Zeeshan and others also spoke on the occasion.
UCs NETWORKING: City Nazim has said that the city government is considering provision of two computers to each of the 178 union councils to have their contact with the city government and towns through information technology.
He stated this while listening to public complaints outside his office at Civic Centre on Wednesday.
Mr Kamal said that once these institutions were linked, they would have the facility of maintaining record of public complaints at every level and getting proper feedback about the steps taken for their solution besides having information about the officers dealing with the complaints and if these were pending the reasons thereof, he said.
The nazim said that after these bodies were connected through IT, people would not need to meet the nazim for their minor problems and their applications.
Italian CG: The Italian Consul-General, Mr Brono, in a meeting with City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal at his office told him that he planned to hold a photographic exhibition to highlight the cultural heritage of two countries.
Mustafa Kamal assured of his all cooperattion and said the city government would provide the required help and assistance in this regard.
He apprised Mr Brono about the ongoing mega projects and said that the city government was working on a fast track to solve the citizen’s basic problems and striving to complete the projects on time.
He said development works were being carried out in all areas of the city on equal basis and Rs50 million had been provided to each town for the improvement of water and sewerage systems.—PPI/APP
