PIA battling for survival
KARACHI, Dec 12: PIA were battling for survival to save the Patron’s Trophy Grade-I cricket championship first round match after Habib Bank piled up a mammoth 681 for eight declared at UBL Sports Complex on Monday.
Responding to the first-innings’ huge target, PIA reached 202 for four at close of play on the penultimate day of the four-day match. They still need 329 runs to avoid follow-on.
Skipper Faisal Iqbal with 42 and veteran former Test all-rounder Asif Mujtaba, who is batting on a painstaking 15 saw out the day in an unbroken stand worth 66 runs so far.
PIA lost openers Agha Sabir and Ghulam Ali with 57 runs on the board but Kamran Sajid and Bazid Khan combined to put on 72 for third wicket.
But both Kamran and Bazid went in quick succession in the final session with Test paceman Shahid Nazir dismissing the pair in three overs.
Kamran’s 161-minute stay yielded 46 off 80 balls with eight boundaries.
Bazid Khan was caught behind by Rafatullah Mohmand off Shahid for 39, a knock that included four fours.
Earlier, surprisingly the bankers batted for another three overs before declaring their innings. Junaid Zia remained unbeaten on 49 with two hits to the boundary.
