ISLAMABAD, Dec 9: Pakistan picked up their second straight victory in the World Team squash championship on Friday blanking Spain 3-0 at the Roshan Khan Complex.
While Farhan Mahboob and Mansoor Zaman were comfortable winners, it was Shahid Zaman who had to go full length in overcoming a stubborn Lago Cornes.
After a 2-1 win over Scotland on the opening day, the home players began in stormy fashion, young Farhan providing a perfect start, crushing Alejandro Garbi 9-0, 9-4, 9-3 in less than half an hour.
But Shahid, facing Borja Golan had to toil for exactly one hour before overpowering him 9-5, 4-9, 9-2, 5-9, 9-7.
Shahid’s victory brought Mansoor on to the stage and he quickly blew Lago Cornes away 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 to round off a fine day’s work.
Pakistan coach Jamshed Gul was pleased with the effort of his boys.
“They played well, Shahid had a hard match... and I am confident the boys will do well against Malaysia on Saturday.”
Malaysia are going to be tough opponents and beating their ace players M. Azlan Iskander and Ong Beng Hee will require something special from the home players.
Defending champions Australia flogged Finland 3-0 in Pool D, Joseph Knipp, Anthony Ricketts and Stuart Boswell proving just too good for their opponents.
