CHENNAI (India), Dec 8: A World XI defeated a combined India-Pakistan team 5-3 in a field hockey benefit match played on Thursday to raise funds for victims of October’s South Asia earthquake.

Mathias Witthaus of Germany scored two goals for the world team while Jamie Dwyer of Australia, Karel Klaver of the Netherlands and Sebastian Biederlack of Germany netted one each.

Arjun Halappa and Viren Rasquina of India and Tariq Aziz of Pakistan scored for the South Asian side.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) was still to determine the amount raised from the match. A local business house, India Cements, presented a cheque of 10,000 dollars to the FIH towards the relief fund.

The FIH-organised match was played in four quarters of 15 minutes each instead of the traditional two 35-minute halves to attract more world-wide television revenue.
