LAHORE, Dec 8: A self-proclaimed kin of the Kashmiri girl, who was allegedly raped by a Mayo Hospital surgeon, promised on Thursday to produce her before police on Friday (today). The girl, a survivor of the October 8 earth-quake, had disappeared from the hospital on Wednesday after a rape case on her complaint was registered against surgeon Dr Maqsood Husain, 43, who had courted arrest to Lahore police.

It was learnt later that the girl and her family had been whisked away by Maulana Muhammad Akram of the Jamia Ashrafia, Anarkali, who claimed himself to be her uncle. However, police were not clear whether to take any action or register an abduction case against the Maulana even after he refused to give the girl in police custody.

“Any such decision (the case registration) has not so far been discussed,” one of the investigators said.

A team sent to the Maulana by Lahore operations police chief Amir Zulfikar Khan had returned disappointed late an Wednesday night. The Maulana had told the team that the matter should be hushed up because he believed that the girl could not get justice in the country.

However, Lahore investigation police chief Chaudhry Shafqaat Ahmad told Dawn that his men had been in contact with Maulana Akram. “The Maulana has promised to produce the girl before investigation team on Friday (today). He has also told the investigators that the girl was not raped. She had signed the case registration application without reading it,” the police chief said, while quoting a telephonic conversation between the Maulana and an investigator.

The SSP said the girl would be medically examined, but only if she so wanted. “If she doesn’t want to be examined, then nobody can force her to do so,” he added.

The girl had earlier stated in a written statement submitted to the police that she had visited the surgeon in his office after he wanted her there with X-Ray reports on the night of Dec 4. She had alleged that the doctor assaulted her after locking her into his office.

However, the surgeon has denied the rape charges, though he admits that he had an intimacy with the girl. He says the girl had inclination towards him because he had been kind to her and her friends in the last two months.
