Research project with US university
SWABI, Dec 7: The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology and the Amercian University of Illinois are launching a Rs30 million joint research project.
This was stated by the Rector of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, Dr Abdullah Sadiq, on Wednesday.
Dr Sadiq is the principal investigator along with Prof Dr Arif Masud of the University of Illinois.
He said the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad, had approved the funding for the Pak-US Joint Research Project proposal entitled “Development of Computational Mechanics Infrastructure and Human Resources for Advancing Engineering Design Practices in Pakistani Industry”.
A review panel of the project recently completed the evaluation process. He said this project was one of the 11 selected projects among the 112 applications that had been submitted to the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, and USAID for funding.
“This proposal deals with establishing state-of-the-art computational mechanics programme at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute to produce needed human resources for advancing engineering design practices in the Pakistani industry,” he said.
He said that the three-year project, which would continue till the year 2008, would help the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute to establish a state-of-art computation facility for carrying out engineering calculation of interest to the local industry.
He said that the facility would be initially used for analyzing seismic data of the areas affected by the recent earthquake to study the safety of large structures such as dams.
He said that the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute would soon receive budget for year 1 of the project.
Funding for the second and third years will be contingent on adequate progress on project objectives as determined by the annual report of the Review Panel which comprises officials of USAID, Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Higher Education Commission.
