16,000 shelters built: ISPR

PESHAWAR, Dec 7: Army engineers with the help of NGOs are constructing shelters for people rendered homeless by the October 8 earthquake and so far around 16,000 shelters have been built in the high altitude affected areas of the NWFP, says an ISPR press release issued here on Wednesday.

According to it, five engineers’ battalions are busy in construction of shelters for quake survivors. Army engineers are training the local people and volunteers in construction of shelters.

So far 15,840 shelters have been constructed in 277 villages of Battagram, Balakot, Shinkiari and Garhi Habibullah areas. Work on about 5,000 more shelters in these areas is near completion.

Army engineers have received 93,000 CGI sheets from the Engineers Directorate, GHQ, and several NGOs.

Engineers’ troops are removing rubble and debris of collapsed buildings in Balakot. Some 105 dumper-load rubble was removed from a government building and a market in the ravaged city. Damaged shops and other structures are also being dismantled in the city.

To ensure non-stop supply of relief goods to the victims, over 20,000 ration cards have been provided to the nazims in Balakot, Ghonol, Satbani, Hangrai, Mahandri, Kawai, Kaghan, Shuhal Mazullah and Garlat union councils.

To accommodate over 21,000 affected families, around 475 tent villages have been established in the quake-stricken areas of the NWFP.

The army has established 22 tent villages in the quake-hit areas of the province where 5,444 families have been accommodated. It has opened 21 schools in tent villages where 130 teachers are imparting education to 3,515 students.

Meanwhile, army aviations helicopters flew 13 sorties from the main operational base Mansehra to the affected areas and airlifted tents, blankets, quilts, ration and medicines.

The United Nations’ MI-8 and MI-26 helicopters flew 18 sorties to Kaghan, Chattar plain and Heer Kotli, dropping 68 tons of food items.

The army sent 13 trucks loaded with tents to various quake-hit areas and delivered 16,160 kilogrammes of relief goods, 435 tents and 688 blankets to the survivors living in far flung areas.

Some 1,330 tents, 1,562 blankets, 12 tarpaulins and 44,563 kilogrammes of food items were distributed at the army distribution points in Garhi Habibullah, Balakot, Battagram, Battal, Khaki and Shinkiari areas.—APP
