Abbasi and Baig criticise PCB: New constitution
ISLAMABAD, Dec 6: Arif Ali Khan Abbasi and Senator Muhammad Enver Baig on Wednesday took a swipe at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over its new constitution which has yet to see light of day.
Abbasi, a former Chief Executive of the board questioned the logic behind going for a new constitution when the old one was good enough.
He told Dawn that there was nothing wrong with the previous document which could be changed by a two third majority of the General Council without bothering the Patron.
The new constitution is said to be with President Gen Pervez Musharraf, who is PCB’s patron, and it has been months since it was submitted.
Senator Enver, a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports accused the PCB chairman Shaharyar M. Khan for the massive delay.
“It was he who betrayed the committee by dilly-dallying on the constitution for months and refused to submit a draft copy, as promised,” he said.
Shaharyar, in one of the meetings had committed that he would present a a copy of the new document to the committee before sending it to the Patron.
But in a move that left the senators fuming, Shaharyar did not honour his promise and instead went directly to the president with the constitution.
Enver pointed out that the PCB boss had lied all along and had not even bothered to have input from its affiliated associations.
On the other hand Abbasi, who was also a secretary of the PCB from 1988 to 1991, said that probably the current managers had not told the Patron that the board was a company registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
“Probably the president has never been briefed on this by the PCB officials and also that the General Council is the fountainhead in the board.”
