CHENNAI, Dec 6: Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene stroked a fluent half-century before the rain-delayed first Test against India ended in a draw on Tuesday. No play was possible on the first 3-1/2 days of the match because of the rain.
The visitors reached 168 for four in their first innings in reply to India’s 167 all out with leg spinner Anil Kumble taking three wickets.
Jayawardene (71) shared half-century stands with Kumar Sangakkara (30) and Thilan Samaraweera (35 not out).
Earlier, left-arm paceman Chaminda Vaas and off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan combined to take the remaining eight Indian wickets when India resumed on 90 for two.
Vaas finished with four for 20 from 21 overs, including 14 maidens, while Muralitharan took two wickets.
The only point of interest on Tuesday was the batting of Sachin Tendulkar who needs one more century to become the Test record holder. However Tendulkar, who shares the record of 34 with compatriot Sunil Gavaskar, was lbw to Muralitharan for 22.
Vaas started the collapse when he dismissed Rahul Dravid during an incisive spell containing seven consecutive maiden overs.
The India captain added just two runs to his overnight score of 30 before he was caught behind poking at a ball outside off stump.
Vangipurappu Laxman was next to depart when he was run out for five and former captain Ganguly, under considerable pressure to perform, fell for the same score.
The visitors lost Avishka Gunawardene in the very first over when the left-handed opener edged left-arm paceman Irfan Pathan to become debutant wicket-keeper Mahendra Dhoni’s first victim.
Jayawardene then took charge. The 28-year-old struck 14 boundaries and a huge six from off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in his 80-ball stay for his 24th Test half century.
Leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who took three wickets, accounted for Jayawardene, caught at short-leg by Gautam Gambhir.
