Action urged under anti-dumping law

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Nov 30: Speakers at a seminar underlined the need for taking stern action against importers who are dumping foreignproducts in the domestic market, thereby harming the national industry. The seminar titled ‘Anti-dumping Law and Procedure’ was jointly organized by the National Tariff Commission and Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday. A large number of businessmen, traders, industrialists, lawyers and consultants attended the seminar.

Ghazanfar Bilour, the chamber’s president, stressed the need for creating awareness about the World Trade Organisation’s regime. He added that the world had become a global village and only the best and the cheapest would survive in this regime. “The SCCI had always strived hard for the betterment of business community and joined hands with organizations making effort in that direction,” he said.

NTC member Mohammad Akram Arif spoke on the WTO trade regime and trade defence laws promulgated by the government of Pakistan to provide a level playing field to the domestic industry.

Mr Arif said that the trade defence laws provided protection to the industry through a rule-based procedure whereby all countries were afforded the same treatment.

He assured business groups that they were here to create awareness about the anti-dumping law and the remedies available to exporters and importers under the WTO regime, which allowed member countries to initiate stern and appropriate action against unfair trade practices.

Mazhar Bangash, legal consultant to the NTC, offered a detailed explanation of the anti-dumping law, its applicability and the protection available under it to the domestic industry.

So far, the NTC has imposed anti-dumping duties on about a dozen imports originating from several countries, he said.

NTC director Khizar Hayat said that experts were on hand to offer counselling to people from the domestic industry if they needed assistance in filing cases against importers involved in dumping products in Pakistan and causing losses to the domestic industry.

In her concluding remarks, NTC secretary Batool Qureshi said the government was keen to create awareness about the WTO regime among the business and trade community and other stake-holders.
