KARACHI: Speaker, CM responsible for fuss, says Zaman

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 29: Deputy leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly Makhdoom Jamiluz Zaman has defended the opposition’s agitation in the house on Monday and held the speaker, chief minister and law minister responsible for all the disorder during the Monday and Tuesday proceedings.

Mr Zaman was addressing a press conference after adjournment of the assembly session on Tuesday.

“Today’s event was part of the strategy pursued by the very people who claim that assemblies are outcome of their own efforts, and that they are champions of the rule of law, although they are the same people who have failed to contain terrorism. They themselves are indulged in all sorts of violation of laws.

“They are the people who introduce laws to foment ethnic tension and strife, vitiate atmosphere of fraternity, and put Sindh and the rest of the country on the road to regression. Certainly, there should be rule of law, but everybody should share the responsibilities in this regard. It was the speaker who had violated laws and failed to maintain stature of his office by siding with the treasury benches.”

Mr Zaman alleged that the chief minister had initiated disorder in the house by passing irresponsible remarks against members. The speaker also did not order the remarks expunged on his own, although he should have done so, he added.

He referred to the opposition members’ meeting on Monday with the speaker, and said that it was aimed at ensuring a smooth running of the session. However, he regretted, Law Minister Chaudhry Iftikhar showed no regard to the understanding reached at the treasury in this regard and resorted to creating a scene in the following house proceedings. The speaker’s attitude also did not change as he, instead of allowing Ghulam Qadir Chandio to speak, ordered him to leave the house. When Syed Murad Ali Shah tried to draw the speaker’s attention the certain rules, he issued ruling against him, instead appreciating the member’s spirit, he added.

Mr Zaman said all this seemed to be the government’s pre-planned strategy of not allowing the house business to be run smoothly. However, he cautioned the coalition, such an attitude was bound to damage its own roots.

In reply to a question, he said the opposition would again attend the session on Wednesday to see whether speaker was ready to consider its points of view.

Syed Murad Ali Shah told journalists that in principle, the opposition should have boycotted the proceedings against the attitude of the speaker who, he claimed, was not fully conversant with the rules of business.
