Prisoner shot dead in court premises

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Nov 28: Police arrested a man for killing an under-trial prisoner in the premises of the Anti-Terrorism Court, Gilgit, on Monday, police said. Police said that the accused, Shamshad, son of Goher Shah, resident of Khomer, Gilgit, sneaked into the courtroom where the under-trial-prisoner, Sher Ahmed, resident of Bagrote valley, was brought in shackles in connection with a murder case against him.

They said Sher was in police custody when Shamshad opened fire badly injuring the under-trial-prisoner (UTP) while another UTP narrowly escaped being hit. Sher was taken to the DHQ Hospital, Gilgit, where he died.

The incident took place soon after local lawyers ended their month-long strike against growing assaults on under-trial prisoners in court premises.

Lawyers said that they had asked the authorities concerned to ensure foolproof security at the court premises after an under-trial prisoner, Rahmat Jan of Jaglote, was shot dead by two accused on October 3 in the presence of police.
