KARACHI, Nov 27: Two persons, including a woman, died and four others were injured in two road accidents within a short span of time in Liaquatabad, triggering law and order situation during which four trucks were set on fire by enraged youths on Sunday night.
According to witnesses, some youths were passing by the Liaquatabad No 10 on two motorcycles when a truck knocked them down. Police said that one of the victims died on the spot while three others were taken to private hospitals for treatment.
Hospital sources at the Abbasi Shaheed told Dawn that Mohammad Ali, 22, was brought dead to the hospital.
Following the accident, people of the area intercepted the truck and set it on fire. Another three trucks which were behind it were also set on fire. Just before this accident, another accident had occurred at Dakhkhana bus stop and a woman was knocked down and her would be son-in-law was injured by a speeding Hyderabad-bound bus.
Police said that Mushtari Begum, 50, was standing near the bus stop along with her daughter and her fiance when the bus hit her and Zeeshan. They were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from where the wounded woman was referred to the JPMC. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival at the JPMC, hospital sources confirmed. Zeeshan was provided treatment at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police said that both the accidents were followed by violent reaction.
The Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Naeem Yousaf, while confirming the torching of the four trucks told Dawn that a motorcycle was also set ablaze.
The officer complained that people turned away the fire tenders by pelting them with stones and the fire could not be controlled.
