KARACHI, Nov 27: Four-year-old colt, Al Faris, upset the applecart when he ran away with the prized Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII Double Birthday Cup in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Al Faris, ranked outsider, was piloted home by seasoned jockey Muhammad Essa, who too, stole the limelight by returning with a brace of winners.

Al Faris’ owner got richer by Rs0.25 million that was put at stake by the KRC.

Occupying second berth was chestnut Ghazan Prince while three-year-old colt, Harry Potter, had to be content with third position in the seven furlong race with a field of nine contestants.

Jockey Essa started the day on an impressive note sprinting Desperado home in the opener by a margin of three lengths.

His second success came in the third race when Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagaro’s four-year-old colt, Chaleswan Chur, outpaced other opponents. His third winner was Al Faris while he rounded off the programme when he rode home filly Funny Girl.

Another jockey Abdul Aziz ended the day with a splendid double through filly, Savabeel and ten-year-old thoroughbred Pakistani Dhoom Machade.

Two-year-old colt, Moon Raker, justified his billing by crossing the finishing post two-and-a-half lengths ahead of closest opponent Stormy Kiss.

In a closely-fought contest, nine-year-old Smashing Arrow smartly ridden by Ashraf Kamal, romped home by a neck leaving Double Deal behind to secure second place.

Five-year-old half-bred, Puma King, overtook Gullu’s Government in the final lap to clinch the last outing by two-and-a-half lengths to make it two in a row.
