KARACHI, Nov 27: A Supreme Court bench disposed of 165 cases, including matters relating to the grant of bail to a NAB accused, recovery of government dues, compensation, land acquisition, labour and human rights in one week at the court’s local registry, according to a Supreme Court press release.
The most prominent case the bench, which consisted of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and Justice M. Javed Buttar, heard was a complaint from Sweden, according to which a Bheel family was being detained by a landlord in his private jail since 1996. The CJ directed the Sindh Police inspector-general to recover the detainees. At the IGP’s request, the case was adjourned to Dec 21 at Islamabad.
Similarly, taking cognizance of complaint addressed by Ashraf Dahani, who has been in custody in a case for 13 years, the court directed the district and sessions judge of Hyderabad and district police officer of Jacobabad to submit detailed reports by Nov 29, when the case would again come up for hearing at the Karachi registry. The prisoner is blind and very old.
Another prominent case disposed of by the bench was the appeal moved by the workers of M/s Hashmi Can Company against the termination of their services. The workers’ petition was dismissed by the Sindh High Court on the technical ground that the documentary evidence furnished by the workers was a photocopy of the impugned letter.
