SHENZHEN (China) Nov 26: Two-day leader Chawalit Plaphol pressed the self-destruct button in spectacular fashion on Saturday to leave the Volvo China Open up for grabs going into the final round.
England’s Ross Fisher held a narrow one-shot lead at 11-under-par 205 from countryman Oliver Wilson and the Thai, who threw away a three-shot advantage in a disastrous front nine.
Zhang Lian-wei revived Chinese hopes on his home course, the par-72 Shenzhen Golf Club, with a sparkling 66 to lie two back in the 1.3-million-dollar event joint-sanctioned by the European and Asian tours.
England’s Barry Lane and Miles Tunnicliff, and Dane Soren Kjeldsen were poised another shot back at eight-under 208, with Ireland’s Peter Lawrie among a group at seven under.
Fisher, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Tuesday and is embarking on his first full European Tour season, found four birdies up the back nine for his second 68 after his first-round 69.
Chawalit, who set a course-record 65 in the first round and was five-under on Friday, went to pieces on the outward nine to dent his hopes of becoming the third Thai to win a European Tour event.
