Bang On Target fancied for day’s big prize

KARACHI, Nov 26: Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII Double Birthday Cup is the main attraction of the Winter Gymkhana race meeting which takes place at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The Karachi Race Club (KRC) has decided to name the fifth race of the programme after the prominent race owner who turned 77 recently.

A sum of Rs 0.25 million would be at stake for the cup, a spokesman for the KRC, Ali Akbar Shah Rashdi, told Dawn on Saturday.

Five-year-old mare, Bang On Target, also owned by Pir Pagaro, is fancied to lift the prize. To be run over a sprinting distance of seven furlongs, the race which is restricted to Pakistani horses in class III & IV, will feature nine contestants.

Three-year-old filly, Fantasia, and four-year-old colt, Al Faris are likely to battle for the next two places.

A card of nine races has been drawn for the day with first race starting at 12.00 noon.

Laural, an eight-year-old bay horse should pick up the spoils in the five furlong opening race. He is expected to be chased by half-bred Desparado and mare Roop Ki Rani.

Ms Benish Hasan’s two-year-old colt, Moon Raker, who was piloted home by jockey Abdul Aziz to land the Fantastic Stakes Cup earlier this month, is our fancy in the second race. Queen Of Mirwa and Conquest To Conqueror should follow Moon Raker for places.

The third race should see three-year-old colt King Of Mehran crossing the finishing post ahead of Bilal Choice and Chaleswan Chur.

In a field of seven contestants, four-year-old filly, Ouija Board, enjoys and edge over her opponents in the fourth race. She is fancied to make it two in a row. She should be followed by Savabeel and Leo.

Four-year-old colt, Azam The Great and Al Jarrar are likely to win honours in the sixth and seventh races.

Al Zarrar, a seven-year-old horse, and Gullu’s Government, a four-year-old colt, should make amends in the last two races. The former settled for second place while latter finished fourth in their races on Nov 20.
