Horse-racing: Welcome Boss tipped to grab feature event
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Nov 26: Four-year-old thoroughbred colt, Welcome Boss, is fancied to win the November Cup featuring the 13th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
A dozen well-bred horses are vying for the event to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1200m.
After his defeat by three lengths from the outstanding performer among three-year-old colts and fillies, Thrill, in the Tariq Bin Zayad Cup last Sunday, Welcome Boss has been installed favourite for this fifth race of the card.
Three-year-old colt Zoro, who was beaten to third place in the same cup, will be his main challenger in this class IV division I handicap race besides Peek Performance, who has the disadvantage of not running during the ongoing season.
This will be Peek Performance’s first run this season.
In the supporting and third race, the Khalid Bin Waleed Cup to be contested over 1000 metres fifteen horses will be loaded into the start gate. Of them four are prominent, two by their fine performance recently and other two on track work. They are Alexander, Well Minister, Miss Pole and Mera Chandiwala.
The main contenders are Alexander and Miss Pole. The track work of Sanam is also good. There is a great excitement concerning the second race, the Khushab Plate, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, maiden at the start.
There is fantastic and overwhelming enthusiasm among racing connoisseurs because they are pedigreed animals and are in the making of future champions. Herry Can View, Sher-i-Gujrat and Charismatic are tracking well. They should fight it out.
In the opener Shatar and Over Trick are prominent among the 16 runners drawn for the event, a class V division II handicap race over 1000m. Shatar is a winner of one race while Over Trick is yet to show his trick and win a race.
Storm Warning, Run And Win, Putra’s Lady and High Dream are the pick of the lot among eight starters in the fourth race. All are speedy animals and may turn the race into an interesting contest.
The sixth race is full of chance horses and winner-picking may prove a difficult task for the punters. On handicapping and form these should end in thrilling finishes.
A card of seven events awaits race-goers, five events will be contested over 1000 metres while two will be gone over 1200 metres. The first race will start at 12.30pm.
