KARACHI: Police foil IJT attempt to hold protest rally
KARACHI, Nov 25: Police on Friday resorted to baton-charge and teargas shelling to disperse the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists, who wanted to hold protest demonstration in front of the Sindh Assembly building against the torture on teachers of the Karachi University and other city colleges.
According to city police, over 40 activists of the IJT including its Karachi Nazim Syed Tahir Akbar were arrested when they refused orders and tried to create law and order situation after gathering in front of the D.J Sindh Govt. Science College Karachi.
Several IJT activists managed to reach the Arts Council roundabout and tried to sneak into the road in front of the Sindh Assembly building but heavy contingents of police thwarted their attempt and used teargas and baton-charged to disperse the demonstrators and arrested several of them.
A group of IJT workers dodged the police and gathered at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) and tried once again to march towards the Sindh Assembly building but police used teargas and resorted to baton-charge in front of the coast guards officers mess and arrested some more IJT activists.
Demo: Later, a few IJT office-bearers and workers who arrived late staged a protest demonstration in front of the KPC and held a protest demonstration against police’s high-handedness and the attitude of the Sindh government towards teachers and the students.
They were carrying placards inscribed with demands of arrest of the culprits involved in manhandling of teachers at the Karachi University, D.J. Science College and Govt. Premier College and announced to continue protest against the ongoing incidents of violence at educational institutes.
Speaking to protestors, IJT Karachi Secretary Syed Amir Ashraf warned the provincial government to mend ways and arrest those involved in violence against teachers and vowed to continue protest till the acceptance of their demands.
He alleged that over 13 IJT workers had sustained injuries in the police action, they were being treated at the Civil Hospital Karachi and JPMC and added that such tactics could not stop them from initiating a peaceful protest.—PPI
