KARACHI, Nov 23: Karachi Urban were on the verge of scoring a much-needed first win in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Gold League cricket tournament after being held up by a fighting century from Lahore Shalimar’s Imran Farhat at the UBL Sports Complex on Wednesday.
The Urban, currently occupying the sixth spot in the seven-team group, have already scored 129 of the 199 required for victory after the visitors had been dismissed for 272 in the second innings.
Maisam Hasnain and Ghulam Ali will resume on the final day in pursuit of the remaining 70 runs having enjoyed a rollicking opening partnership.
Maisam was batting on 64, a knock embellished with 13 spanking boundaries, while the evergreen Ghulam Ali had sent the ball 10 times to the fence on his way to 56 at stumps on day three.
Lahore Shalimar’s tormentor on the third day was Azam Hussain. The slow left-armer snared five for 87 in 21.2 overs. He was given excellent support by off-spinner Tahir Khan (3-49 in 16 overs).
It was Tahir who scalped Imran for a gallant 107 after the opener had added 80 to his overnight score of 27. The left-hander was seventh out, hit-wicket in peculiar circumstances — disturbing his off-stump with his bat while attempting a cut.
Imran batted for four hours for 13th first-class century during which he negotiated 183 deliveries and hit 12 fours and one six. The only worthwhile partnership for Shalimar was provided by Imran and Jahangir Mirza (36 off 39 balls with seven fours) who added 76 for the sixth-wicket.
