Waqar, Mehdi lift singles crowns


ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: Punjab’s Waqar Zahid clinched the under-19 and Sindh’s Ali Mehdi grabbed the U-16 crown in the finals of the National junior badminton championship at Rodham Hall, Pakistan Sports Complex, on Wednesday.

In the girls’ finals, NBP’s Sara Khan downed Palwasha Bashir (Wapda) to claim the U-19 singles’ title.

Sara then partnered with Mahrukh (Sindh) to beat Palwasha-Saira (Wapda) to lift the U-19 doubles crown.

Danish-Kashif (Punjab) disposed of Murad-Tahir (NWFP) to win the U-19 doubles final.

However, Murad-Tahir knocked out Irfan-Arsalan (Punjab) to become the U-16 champions.

Results (finals):

Boys U-16 singles: Ali Mehdi bt Murad Ali 17-14, 15-17, 15-8.

Boys U-16 doubles: Murad-Tahir bt Irfan-Arsalan 15-3, 15-13.

Boys U-19 singles: Waqar Zahid bt Zaran Ghazali 15-11, 15-6.

Boys U-19 doubles: Danish-Kashif bt Murad-Tahir 15-6, 15-1.

Girls U-16 doubles: Aqsa-Anam bt Rita-Nabeela 15-5, 15-17, 15-8.

Girls U-19 singles: Sara Khan bt Palwasha Bashir 11-3, 11-0.

Girls U-19 doubles: Sara Khan-Mahrukh bt Palwasha Bashir-Saira 14-17, 15-7, 15-4.—APP
