SUKKUR, Nov 23: Secretary General of the Sindh chapter of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and prominent leader Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam (JUI) Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro has alleged that the government is intentionally causing damage to the agriculture sector of Sindh. He warned that a strong protest against the government would be launched if the current policies persisted.
At a press conference here on Wednesday, he termed the prices fixed for the purchase of paddy, cotton, wheat and other crops as very low and urged the government to increase the rates keeping in view the hardships being faced by growers.
He also asked the government to establish more PASSCO procurement centres to facilitate the growers, he demanded to increase the purchase price of sugarcane.
Dr Soomro further said that the graph of poverty, unemployment, robbery and lawlessness was on the rise in Sindh, which warranted immediate corrective measures so as to provide peace of mind to the people.
Lashing out at the government, he said that, the government which can not provide employment and protection to the people, has no right to levy taxes.
He advised the rulers to stop lip service and work for the welfare of the people.
He said the government had received an ample amount for the relief of earthquake victims which was sufficient enough to rebuild and rehabilitate the areas hit by quake.
He expressed his concern that the earthquake victims were still awaiting relief.
He demanded of the government to start rehabilitation work immediately in the affected areas.
He further said that the obscenity and other social evils were on the rise in the name of enlightened moderation in the country and added that the government was responsible for it.
He disclosed that JUI would hold a peasant and labour convention on district level throughout the province, to raise voice in favour of pressing demands of the peasants and labour.
He said that an important meeting of JUI would be held in Hyderabad on November 27, under the presidentship of JUI chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman.
