HYDERABAD, Nov 23: A district coordination committee has been formed to work for eradicating child labour, especially in the bangles industry, in the district.

The committee, formed at a meeting presided over by DCO Mohammad Hussain Syed at his camp office on Tuesday, will be headed by the district nazim and will have representatives from organizations concerned.

Those who attended the meeting included Mohammad Saifullah Chaudhry, senior programme officer of the Inter-national Labour Organization, Mohammad Ibrahim Qureshi, EDO, community development, Rasool Bux Soomro and Ali Nawaz Nizamani of the NRSP.

They discussed elimination of child labour in the glass bangles industry in the district under the International Programme on Elimination of Child Labour being implemented by the district government with technical and financial support of the ILO and the NRSP.

Speaking on the occasion, the DCO said the nazim would be the chairman, he himself would be the co-chairman and the EDO, community development, would be the secretary of the committee.

EDOs of education, health, finance and planning departments and a representative of labour organizations would be members of the committee and one representative of the NRSP would work as a focal person.

He asked the EDO, community development, to encourage schemes of Citizens’ Community Boards, especially those aimed at elimination of child labour. He said funds of the district Zakat committee and the Baitul Maal would also be used for rehabilitation of affected children and families by providing education and credit facilities to them.

ILO senior officer Chaudhry told the meeting that his organization was planning to provide education facilities to 5,000 children in the Hyderabad district by providing alternative opportunities to children and their parents.

He also informed that in addition to funds provided by stakeholder organizations, the ILO would also provide $0.5 million to complete the task in Hyderabad.

The DCO also directed the EDO, community development, to prepare a work plan to eliminate child labour in the bangle industry within two years.
