ISLAMABAD, Nov 22: Sindh’s Mahrukh annexed girls’ under-16 singles title defeating Sofia Mughal, also of Sindh, in straight games 11-1, 11-2 in the NBP National junior badminton championship at Rodham Hall, Pakistan Sports Complex, on Tuesday.
Mahrukh beat Punjab’s Anum in straight sets 11-1, 11-2 in the first U-16 singles semifinal played earlier, while Sofia Mughal beat Punjab’s Bisma 11-9, 13-11 in the second semifinal.
In the U-19 singles, NBP’s Sara Khan and Wapda’s Palwasha Bashir moved into the final. Sara Khan defeated Aqsa Razzak (Punjab) 11-3, 11-5 in the first semifinal while Palwasha beat Mahrukh 11-1, 11-4 in the second semifinal.
Sara-Mahrukh beat Khizra-Sidre (Islamabad) 15-6, 15-4 in the first girls’ U-19 doubles semifinal. The second semifinal was still in progress.
Murad Ali (NWFP) outclassed Jamal (Sindh) 15-5, 15-7 in the first boys’ U-16 singles semifinal while in the second semifinal Ali Mehdi (Sindh) beat Shahbal Ahmad (Punjab) 15-12, 15-10.
Murad will now meet Ali Mehdi in the final.
Irfan-Arsalan (Punjab) beat Sajjad-Shahbal (Punjab) in a well-contested three-set match 10-15, 15-12, 15-10 in the first boys’ U-16 doubles semifinal.
Murad-Tahir (NWFP) beat Ali Jamal-Haris 15-10, 15-11 in the second semifinal.
Boys U-16 singles: Ali Jamal bt Naveed 13-15, 15-12, 15-5, Shahbal bt FATA 15-7, 15-1, Ali Mehdi bt Ahmad Sajid 15-9, 15-6, Murad Ali bt Arsalan 15-7, 15-7.
Boys U-19 singles: Gazali bt Abdullah 15-2, 15-5, Waqas bt Jalil 15-2, 15-10, Kashif bt Qadir 15-10, 15-13, Faisal bt Ali Mehdi 15-9, 17-15.—APP
