Three buses torched, 15 vehicles damaged: Student killed

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Nov 22: Students of the Government Islamia College Civil Lines torched three buses and damaged 15 other vehicles after their college fellow was killed by a bus on Lower Mall on Tuesday.

Delhi Gate resident and first year student of the college Yasir Ejaz, 19, was trying to cross the road when he was knocked down by a speeding bus. He died on way to the Mayo Hospital.

Soon after the incident hundreds of students of the college took to the road. They blocked the road and torched the bus that hit the student. They intercepted two more buses, offloaded passengers and set the vehicles on fire.

Large police contingent rushed to spot to calm down the angry students who refused to negotiate with police officials and damaged six more buses and nine other vehicles, including vans and cars.

Traffic on Lower Mall and its link roads remained suspended for four hours, creating problems for motorists.

The protesters dispersed after senior police officers held out an assurance to them that a murder case would be registered against the driver and bus company owner(s).

Punjab IGP Ziaul Hasan Khan took a serious notice of the incident and directed the traffic police DIG to take afresh test of all drivers plying public transport in Lahore.

“Only those who pass the test will be allowed to drive public transport.”

Mr Khan said a team of senior traffic police officers would be set up to conduct a scrutiny of driving licences besides coordinating with the administration of bus companies.

Condemning the incident, Lahore Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood directed the police to register a murder case against the bus driver and company owner(s).

Meanwhile, the body of the student was handed over to the family without an autopsy.
