LAHORE, Nov 21: Police on Monday intensified search and frisking of motorcyclists and motorists following the killing of a constable by robbers on Sunday after midnight. Constable Muhammad Asghar, 28, was shot dead while another, Khalid, had been wounded by two robbers at Sahowari on Mughalpura link-road.

The police patrol headed by Mughalpura SHO Sarfraz Shah had intercepted the robbers on a motorcycle before they opened fire on the them. The outlaws had left the motorcycle and a pistol at the crime scene, and managed their escape on foot.

Police sources said the SHO was sitting in his vehicle when the two constables had stopped the robbers for a search. They added the SHO did not come out of the vehicle even after his men were shot at by the robbers.

The sources said the outlaws, riding the motorcycle bearing a suspicious number plate, had snatched cell phones and wallets from two men near the UET. They said neither the police patrol nor any of the routine pickets noticed the unusual number plate of the motorcycle used by the miscreants.

The police sped up the search and frisking of motorists and motorcyclists on various city roads despite taking in custody the motorcycle used in the crime.

Many of the people who were frisked at these pickets complained of police behaviour. It did not help as far as the arrest of the robbers was concerned.

Meanwhile, the funeral of the deceased constable was held at the district police lines.
