LAHORE, Nov 21: A fresh survey to figure out the number of dangerous public school buildings has been initiated by the education department. The buildings of 4,891 public schools were found to be dangerous in the previous survey completed in the middle of this year under the education reforms programme of the Punjab government. However, no measures have been taken by the authorities concerned to ensure the safety of the students who are studying in these buildings.
A senior officer of the education department told Dawn on Monday that 50 per cent work on the new survey launched last month had been completed.
He said after the completion of the survey, new structures would be raised after dismantling the existing ones. He said the department was reluctant to come up with a plan in the light of the findings of the previous survey as several school buildings which were not dangerous were made part of the list to gain financial benefits. “The new survey will help portray the exact picture,” he added.
Sources said the government had initiated the previous survey in 2003 and on its findings it was to build new structures of the dangerous school buildings within a period of two years. They said that most of the school buildings declared dangerous had been built before partition.
