KARACHI: Drivers institute to be reactivated

KARACHI, Nov 18: The drivers of heavy duty vehicles would be imparted road safety education to contain traffic accidents in Karachi. In this regard, the government is taking priority measures to re-activate the defunct KTC Drivers Institute in SITE area which is lying closed for many years.

This was stated by Additional District Officer Zafar Ahsan in a lecture on road safety at Transport and Communication Department here on Friday.

He pointed out that fatal accidents are rising in Karachi and on an average two persons die in traffic accidents daily.

Zafar said despite being less in number, mostly drivers of buses, mini-buses, water and oil-tankers, loaders and trucks are involved in traffic accidents.

He stressed the need for having a centralised driving licence computerised system to do away with the trend of keeping more than one driving licences.

He said there is a need for legislation on the pattern of Saudi Arabia to control fatal accidents.

He said that in Karachi 51 per cent accidents occur because of padestrians.

Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has directed the City Government’s Transport Department to keep provision for pedestrians in traffic projects and identify spots for construction of overhead bridges where pedestrians face problems.—APP
