16 Pakistanis arrested in Morocco

By Mohammad Asghar

RAWALPINDI, Nov 17: As many as 16 Pakistanis have been arrested by Moroccan authorities on charges of entering the country without valid documents on Oct 24, Dawn has learnt. Pakistanis have been shifted to the Guelmin city prison some 1700km from capital Rabat. Majority of the illegal immigrants belonged to Kotli in Azad Kashmir, an official source said.

He said a few days after they were arrested, the Pakistani consular assistant along with the Moroccan immigration officials visited the detainees in the prison to establish their origin.

After conducting personal interviews, the official confirmed that the origin of the detainees was Pakistan.

Besides these 16, another Pakistani identified as Hameed Mehmood, son of Ahmed Deen from Faisalabad, had also illegally entered Morocco in an attempt to cross over to Spain. However, he was also captured. He has been waiting for deportation for the last four months. The source said the Pakistan embassy in Rabat had requested the Moroccan authorities to include the name of Mr Hameed in the list of detainees expected to be deported soon.
