KARACHI, Nov 17: The Sindh Assembly session beginning on Friday would draw firework from the opposition benches over the law and order situation and the issue of good governance.
The house, which has been summoned by Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad with a lengthy agenda of 18 items on the order of the day, could last 17 days to complete minimum sitting of 70 days as the parliamentary year of the provincial assembly will end on Dec 11.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Iftikhar Chaudhry told Dawn that the treasury had enough legislation work for the session and the members’ aim would be to carry out maximum possible legislation business.
In reply to a question, he said the coalition’s parliamentary party was going to meet on Thursday night to formulate a strategy for the session.
PPP’s parliamentary party was also to meet on Thursday night but it was deferred to Friday morning, before the start of the session, as stated by PPP’s deputy parliamentary leader Makhdoom Jameeluz Zaman. The meeting to chalk out PPP’s strategy for the session would be held in the chamber of the leader of the opposition in the assembly, he said.
According to him, the PPP has deposited some eight resolutions and motions pertaining to deteriorating law and order situation in the province. He said lawlessness in Sindh, particularly in the interior.
He said that he had submitted a resolution for providing protection to minorities who were feeling insecure due to recent incidents of kidnapping of their community members.
In the order of the day, the business includes privilege motion of Ms Shazia Marri and an adjournment motion notice of which was given by opposition leader Nisar Ahmed Khuhro.
The 10 government bills which have been included in the agenda pertain to the promotion and protection of consumers’ interests; establishment of the Indus Institute of Higher Education and the Pakistan Institute of Management; establishment of Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences in Gambat; and amendment to The Removal From Service (Special Powers) Sindh Ordinance-2000.
The other bills enlisted on the agenda are: The Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill-2005; Amendment to the Sindh Cotton Control Ordinance-1966; The Societies Registration (Sindh Amendment) Bill-2005; The Sindh Transfusion of Safe Blood (Amendment) Bill-2005; and the Sindh Health Institutions (Establishment and Management) Bill-2005.
In addition to these bills, the government-sponsored resolutions regarding amendment to the Seed Act-1976 and legislation on protection of plant breeder’s rights are also included in the order of the day.
