ISLAMABAD, Nov 16: Repre-sentative of United Nations Population Fund, Dr France Donnay has said that UNFPA has mobilized about $5 million to revive health system and to train community health providers in basic maternal care in the earthquake- affected areas.

“Some of the major donors to UNFPA are Japan, Germany and Norway and these funds are needed to adequately care for the thousands of women who require medical assistance in the coming months,” she stated while briefing mediapersons about UNFPA activities in affected areas of AJK and NWFP on Wednesday.

She said that in the areas affected by the earthquake, 8500 women were expected to give birth every month and almost 600 of them would experience complications, sometimes requiring surgical care including C-sections and added that almost half a million women would need reproductive health information and services.

The mobile service unit in District Bagh, staffed with a female doctor and nurses, is the only health facility where women can come for deliveries and between 5-10 deliveries are conducted every day while new mothers and babies are sheltered and provided with personal items.— Online
