RAWALPINDI, Nov 15: Pakis-tan Muslim League vice-president Syed Kabir Ali Wasti has said Chaudhrys are a major hurdle in the implementation of President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s liberal agenda.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Mr Wasti said the Muslim Leaguers opposing “the wrong, ill-conceived” policies of Chaudhrys had neither personal differences, personal agenda and nor were lobbying for any particular candidate to become the president of the party.

“We are neither forming any party nor group, and are much in the PML and raising voice within the party for advancement of the progressive and liberal agenda of President Musharraf,” he added.

“We do believe that Chaudhrys are fundamentalist and conservative from the core of their hearts and have been creating hurdles in implementation of President Musharraf‘s progressive agenda.”

Mr Wasti said Chaudhrys had been opposing many issues initiated by the president to advance his liberal and progressive agenda in the interests of the country. He said if the president considered that Chaudhrys could advance his agenda, we don’t have any objection. “We, however, still believe that they can neither run the party nor advance the president’s agenda of enlightened moderation as they are working for their own vested interests and ideology based on fundamentalism,” he said.

He warned that the president may lose mass support in case he took side with the Chaudhrys because the latter are not popular among the people. He termed Chaudhrys a major hurdle in getting mass support for the president who, he said, was a popular leader and a statesman.

“They can do nothing for the president, rather have become a liability for him after getting boost and support from the president. They are making bids to enhance their own personal image particularly in the guise of launching development projects in the Punjab,” he added.

He said Chaudhrys were giving wrong impression to the people about their leadership quality contrary to the fact that President Musharraf was the only leader of the leaguers and credit goes to him for all projects in the country.
