Raise in cement price worries traders
GUJRANWALA, Nov 15: Cement traders have expressed their concern over Rs18 increase in the price of a cement bag by manufacturers and demanded import from India at the earliest. At a meeting held here on Tuesday presided over by cement trade group president Sattar Sheikh, the participants said top politicians and other influential people were running cement factories and allegedly earning 120 per cent profit.
They said the real price of a cement bag was Rs140 and it was being sold for Rs320 despite the fact that the government had already reduced excise duty and sales tax, besides tax-free supply of coal.
CRITICIZED: The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and industry has criticized a cell phone company for poor cell phone service during Eid days.
Speaking at a meeting held here on Monday with chamber president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt in the chair, the participants said the company was involved in a race for increasing the number of its subscribers.
They said they had to dial a required number twice and thrice as the call drop rate was high during Eid holidays.
They said about half a dozen national and multinational telecom companies, including PTCL, were working in the country, but the service of Mobilink was worsening due to the ‘reckless’ competition.
ANTI-DUMPING DUTY: The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the government to impose duty on dumping articles from China and other smuggled items to save them from heavy losses.
Speaking at a seminar on anti-dumping duties organized by the National Tariff Commission here on Tuesday, chamber president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt, senior vice-president Ziaullah Irfani and vice-president Anwer Aslam said workshops should be arranged throughout the country to create awareness among small traders about World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.
BLACK WARRANTS: District and Sessions Judge Mazhar Husain Minhas on Tuesday issued black warrants for a condemned prisoner and directed the jail superintendent to implement the court orders on Dec 1, 2005.
Reports said Alam Javid had killed Qaiser Mehmood in Islamabad locality of Alipur Chatha in 1993. The sessions court had awarded him death sentence in 1994. The higher judiciary and the president had rejected his appeals against the conviction.
