Students criticize imposition of fine

By Our Correspondent

KOHAT, Nov 15: Students of computer science in the Kohat University of Science and Technology have threatened to stage a sit-in outside the Governor’s House in Peshawar against imposition of fines by the administration.

Dozens of students of masters of computer science told journalists at the local press club on Tuesday that 271 of the 450 students in the programme had been fined Rs2,000 to Rs4,000 for attendance shortage.

They said the administration had asked them to pay the fine by Nov 18 and warned them that otherwise they would not be allowed to appear in the examination.

They further said only about 50 student’s attendance was short of the requirement but the administration had fined a large number of them without any valid reason.

They alleged that the coordinator of the MCS faculty, Zeeshan Khattak, had refused to talk to them.

They said the amount of fine imposed on the students was Rs370,000.

They said such a fine had not been imposed on students of other faculties in the university.

They said the notification about the fine and attendance criteria had been displayed two days before the exams started. They said that the staff got their signatures on affidavits before the first paper on Nov 11 and warned that those who refused to sign those would not be allowed to take the examination.

They alleged that most of the teachers had not maintained the attendance record properly. They said every student had been allotted different role numbers in different subjects.

They said the university had been established to provide a chance of higher education to people of backward areas but the administration was discouraging the students from poor families.

They said they had not been provided hostel and transport facilities.

They demanded that the fine should be withdrawn or reduced.
