KARACHI, Nov 15: Leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has strongly condemned Tuesday’s bomb blast in a high-security area of Karachi, and described it as failure of the regime which had been claiming that the network of terrorists had been broken.
Addressing a news conference in his assembly chamber on Tuesday, Mr Khuhro said the incident was condemnable and proved that the government was not capable of defending people, but was just engaging in rhetoric. “It is the result of the government’s failure to seriously address the problem of law and order,” he said.
Mr Khuhro said that Gen Pervez Musharraf had claimed that he had broken the network of the terrorists, but such incidents proved his claim wrong. Instead of victimizing the opposition and blaming one group or the other, the regime must explain its failure, he asserted. He said the government must now step down because it had failed to provide security to its people.
The opposition leader said that the chief minister of Sindh had failed, adding that only a people-backed government could ensure security and improvement in law and order.
He also accused the government of destabilizing the province by creating confusion about the Language Act. With regard to the upcoming session of the provincial assembly, Mr Khuhro said the government had summoned the same just to meet constitutional requirements, and claimed that it was not serious in house business. He said that the opposition had deposited many bills and wanted to introduce the same in the house but the government always resorted to sabotaging the opposition’s move through numerical superiority and other methods.
He also deplored the recent attempt on the life of MPA Akhtar Jadoon and said the opposition would raise the issue in the upcoming session.
Mr Khuhro referred to the issue of the proposed ban on the use of polythene and plastic bags that was raised a few months back in the assembly, and said the opposition had already submitted a bill in this regard because it felt the bags were hazardous to environment. However, he said, the government had opted for imposing the ban through an ordinance which would tantamount to overriding legislators’ powers.
He was of the view that since the assembly would soon be in session, representatives of people should have the right to legislating laws for the betterment of the people.
He said that PPP-Parliamentarians had submitted more than 30 private members’ bills regarding social problems being faced by the people. However, he alleged, the government was least interested in addressing the problems.
