Meherullah, Asghar score impressive points victories

MIANYANG (China), Nov 14: Pakistan’s Meherullah cleared the first hurdle when he defeated Djelkhir Khedafi of France on points in the preliminary featherweight bout of the world boxing championships on Monday. On Sunday, another Pakistani Asghar Ali Shah moved ahead after beating Dulat Borankulov of Kazakhstan on points to win the lightweight fight.

Yan Bartelemy and Sergey Kazakov, currently the two best light-flyweights in amateur boxing, cleared their paths toward a possible grudge fight for the gold.

The Cuban southpaw Bartelemy, the reigning Olympic champion, put on a show of power, speed and aggression in disposing of his preliminary round opponent, M.Nasir of Wales and set himself on course for the medal rounds.

Using his right jabs to open up his foe’s defenses, he chased the game Welshman across the ring from the opening bell, delivering a dizzying variety of killer hooks and upper-cuts to the face and combination body punches for an easy-points win over four rounds.

Fellow left-hander Kazakov, the rangy world and European champion with a pressing fighting style, decked another boxer from the British isles, Darren Longley of England, in the third round en route to a points decision on the other half of the draw.

Bartelemy holds the upperhand in their personal rivalry with two wins notched-up against Kazakov, including one in the World Cup in Moscow earlier this year, but it was the Cuban who went out in the early rounds in the last world championships in Bangkok in 2003.

Bartelemy later won the gold in the Athens Olympics last year, while the Russian went out against another foe in the semifinals. “Bartelemy is the better fighter,” insists Cuban coach Sarbelio Fuentes.

Standing on the Cuban’s path on the top half of the draw is local fighter Zhou Shiming, who lost to Bartelemy in the Olympic final last year and bowed to Kazakov in Bangkok in the last world championships.

Zhou hurdled his first bout here Monday, disposing of Poland’s Lukasz Maszczyk by points.

The Cubans, favorites for the overall title in this tournament, are now 7-1 after two days of preliminary bouts after another dazzling display in their campaign to reclaim the world championship they narrowly lost to Russia in Thailand two years ago.

A rampant Yuriolkis Gamboa, the second of four reigning Cuban Olympic champions here, later ambushed hapless Afghan featherweight Homayoun, landing 13 straight punches without reply to force a win in 73 seconds.
