Rs2.92bn paid as compensation in affected areas

ISLAMABAD, Nov 14: An amount of Rs2.92 billion has been distributed among quake-affected people of the NWFP and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) the financial compensation was made to the next of kin of 19,418 dead people, 1,798 injured and 37,340 people for their damaged houses.

In the NWFP, the amount was paid to the next of kin of 12,053 dead, 1,798 injured and 6,574 people for damaged houses, whereas in the AJK relatives of 7,365 dead were paid the compensation amount and 30,756 people received financial aid for their damaged houses in the aftermath of the Oct 8 devastating quake.

The ISPR said that around 117 helicopter sorties were conducted to airlift relief goods and ration to the quake-affected areas of Battagram, Darband, Bana, Kawai, Matung, Garhi Habibullah, Paras, Balakot and Alai of the NWFP besides Neelum and Jehlum valleys of the AJK during the last 24 hours.

About 140 trucks carrying relief goods were sent to Muzaffarabad, 47 to Rawlakot, three to Hajira, two to Abasspur and 104 to Bagh.

During the period, 11,082 tents, 19,045 blankets, 44.60 tons of food stuff, 0.018 tons of medicines and 14.13 tons of miscellaneous items had been airlifted or transported by road to the quake-afflicted areas from Chaklala air base.

The ISPR said that 1,483 injured people had been admitted to military hospitals and 2,776 to civil hospitals. To date 1,589 doctors and paramedics of the army, navy, civilian and foreign teams were engaged in the field to provide medical care to the injured and patients in the quake affected areas.

Around 65,000 quake-stricken people had been provided shelter in 10,596 tents of various tent-villages.

Army engineers had opened 126-km chunks in Mansehra-Balakot and Muzaffarabad sectors. The Karakoram Highway had been cleared of the slides at Pattan, Barsin and Dubair.

In Mansehra-Balakot sector, the Balakot-Malakndi road till RD-57 and 18 km of the 36-km Besham-Banna-Alai road had been reopened.

In Muzaffarabad sector (Neelum Valley), 19.5 km of the Muzaffarabad-Patikka road, 7.5 km jeep-able track at Patikka-Dolain road, 11.5 km jeep-able track of 13.5 km at Dolain-Nausari, 23.8 km of 30 km Nauseri-Jura road, 51.5 km Laswa Bypass-Jura road (in stretches), and 12.6 km of Paddar-Mohra Siddiq-Chakothi road have been cleared.
