KARACHI: Investments evidence of improved security: CM

KARACHI, Nov 14: Sindh Chief Minster Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has said that security situation in the province, including Karachi city, has improved considerably as a result of positive measures taken by the present government, which is evident from the soaring foreign investment.

This he stated while talking to a 19-member delegation of senior officials of Pakistan National Defence College, which called on him, Monday afternoon at Chief Minister House.

The delegation, led by Lt-Gen Shahid Hamid, Commandant of the College, included officials from Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and some African countries.

The Chief Minister agreed to the perception that Pakistan is facing “image problem” but added that this was owing to some reasons and one of these was un-precedented media freedom granted by the present government.

However, he was confident, that with frequent visits of foreigners and huge foreign investment taking place in the stock markets, such a wrong impression would be dispelled.

He informed the participants that till recent past, three to four gangs of outlaws were active in Karachi. One of them has been eliminated, the other put behind the bar while the remaining two are on the run.

Referring to tribal conflicts taking place in some districts bordering with Balochistan, the Chief Minister described it an age-old menace and informed that the government is engaged with some law-abiding and local influential people to cope with the same.

The police system, he said, is being further strengthened not only by raising the number of police force but also equipping them with modern techniques and facilities.

He said a special police force has been set up to ensure peace in the industrial areas. Similarly, community police system is also working in some of the residential areas in Karachi.

The Chief Minister said the government has also planned to install cameras at sensitive installations, like airport, oil refinery, jails, and other vital places to beef up security measures.

He said the government is working with multi-national companies to check growing incidents of mobile telephone snatching in the city.

On the occasion, the Home Secretary presented data on crimes in the city and compared them with crime rates in London and other big cities in the world.

He said that foreign visitors, even in most of the developed countries, are advised not to visit certain areas for security reasons but in Karachi we do not need to give such an advice to anybody because the situation did not warrant so. He further informed the participants that religious-inspired violence has also decreased in Karachi.—APP
