Heather cruises into last 4

KARACHI, Nov 13: England’s 10th seed, Mark Heather, continued his winning run when he downed Pakistan’s 12th seed, Basit Ashfaq, in straight games to cruise into the last four of the sixth Chief of the Naval Staff international squash championship at the PN Roshan/ Jahangir Squash Complex on Sunday.

Heather, ranked 66th in the world, conjured up a 11-7, 11-5, 11-10 victory over Basit in 33 minutes.

He had toppled top seed and last year’s runner-up Shahid Zaman in four games in the opener the other day.

Mark Heather is slated to meet compatriot and third seed, Jonathan Kemp, who had got the better of Egypt’s sixth seed, Hisham M Ashour, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 in 19 minutes.

Joining the above foreigners in semifinals were two home players, qualifier Amjad Khan and ninth seed, Arshad Burki.

Qualifier Amjad overcame seventh seed Aamir Atlas 11-10, 11-6, 11-8 in superb style in 30 minutes while Arshad Burki disposed of eighth seed Khayal Khan 11-8, 11-6, 11-9.

Amjad takes on Arshad in the other semifinal which will be an all Pakistan affair.

Monday’s fixtures: Semifinals at 3.00pm. Mark Heather (Eng) v Jonathan Kemp (Eng), Amjad Khan (Pak) v Arshad I. Burki (Pak).
