Thrill enthrals race-goers with emphatic victory

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Nov 13: Fancied bay colt, Thrill, thrilled race-goers by his superb performance winning the supporting event during the 11th Lahore Winter Meeting at the floodlit Racecourse on Saturday.

The three-year-old son of Baker’s Gate out-of-Poly Game, Thrill, burst to the front 200 metres from home then sprinted clear to win the 1300 metres race under jockey Shahid Rehman.

This, the Khanewal Plate Class V Division II handicap race was the fifth in racing order in a card of eight races.

With this victory, the colt completed a hat trick of victories. He beat Puma The Great by four and a half lengths easily.

A race later the chestnut English filly, Free Fall, led all the way to be home comfortably sparing four lengths over Dixie Queen. Calendar Girl was a close third while the field finished a distance away.

Three jockeys Shahid Rehman, M Zeeshan and Javed Iqbal shared the riding honours of the day when each brought in a brace of winners.

Shahid Rehman steered fancied Newton and Thrill to victories in the fourth and fifth race while M Zeeshan romped home on Hatam and Poly Dunit in the opener and third race.

Javed Iqbal rode Shatar and Top Figure in the seventh and eighth race of the day.

Races on Sundays

The LRC stewards on Saturday decided to revert to old practice of holding races on Sundays instead of Saturday.

The experiment of holding races under floodlights on Saturday failed to attract race-goers.

Normally about 2400 or more attend the meeting, but on Saturday the attendance was hardly a little over 1800.

TRAINER HONOURED

A champion trainer of yester years, Haji Ghulam Sarwar was honoured by the LRC chairman, Tariq Aziz and recalled to train his stable horses.

Sarwar had been training Mr Tariq Aziz’s stable horses for about two years but was replaced by veteran trainer Khadim Hussain.

Khadim parted ways after a year and the job was entrusted to Mubarik Ali, a jockey turned trainer who failed to deliver goods due to lack of experience.

The majority of stable animals went lame prompting Mr Tariq Aziz to recall one of his old trainers and Haji Sarwar became the automatic choice.

They are: Khadim Hussain, Haji Fazal Hadi, Haji Ghulam Sarwar, I Nawab, Sohail Aziz and Amjad Ali II.
