Savabeel makes it two in a row

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Nov 13: Pre-race favourite three-year-old filly Savabeel made it two in a row when she grabbed the feature event in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Savabeel’s victory was never in doubt considering her shining performance in the last race when she outclassed the closest opponent Arabian Queen by 10 lengths.

Though she maintained ascendancy but this time a close margin of a half length separated her from fighting Countess Mah Again. Queen Of Sanghar had to be content with third place.

Lady luck continues to smile on jockey Abdul Aziz who performed yet another splendid treble so did the owner M R Hussain whose two horses returned with flying colours.

With the exception of opener, promising Aziz either secured top position or a place in the remaining races. His winners were Tom Cruise, Smiling Face and Savabeel.

Another owner, Haji Khuda Bux Rajar, also had his share when he won two back-to-back races through Smiling Face and Silent Angel. Both the horses were trained by Mushtaq Ali Khan.

Trainer, Allah Judrio, also ended the day on a happy note with two wins to his credit through Ultimate Victory and Janu Janwar.

Nine-year-old mare, Taneez, finally overcame a bad patch when she clinched the opener by two and a half lengths. Golden Copy and Baby Raysham finished second and third, respectively.

Ultimate Victory, a six-year-old mare, who had to be content with second slot in the last meeting, defeated bookies’ favourite, Princess Ridda by neck to claim victory in the second race.

The third race was dominated by Tom Cruise while four-year-old filly Smiling Face justified her billing by winning the next race with ease by six lengths.

In a field of 12 contenders, three-year-old colt Silent Angel ridden by Ghulam Shabbir II lived up to his credentials in the fifth race while Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara’s Janu Janwar, a three-year-old colt, crossed the finishing post four lengths ahead of closest rival, Sweet Grandy, in the sixth race.

The next race meeting will be held on Nov 20.
